Karma means action. Karma Yoga is the discipline of action; selfless actions. Karma Yoga provides us with the opportunity to give ourselves to selfless service. The student of Karma Yoga also has knowledge of Jnana Yoga, becoming aware of the connection of everything, and seeing the Absolute in everyone and everywhere. The scriptures say that the practice of Karma Yoga burns karma, though one should not do Karma Yoga for the benefit of burning karma. It is important to do Karma Yoga without expectation of any personal gain. An important point that can pose a problem in the path of Karma Yoga is attachment.

When service is done, there needs to be detachment from the process in such a way that the Karma Yogi does the work without the need for expectation. We live in the scene of our own reality and this is expressed in the world of duality. The Karma Yogi does the work, whatever it may be, keeping in mind that there is a bigger plane of existence, and everything happens for a reason, although this is not a reason for apathy or passivity. There is no need to give medals to anyone. We just do the work in the present without expectation of gain. The work of Karma Yoga is the natural way for the Karma Yogi to love others. Devotion, for the Karma Yogi, is very present on this path, which is why Karma Yoga is very connected to the path of Bhakti Yoga.

Karma Yoga doesn’t just mean working for an NGO or some exotic project. We can find numerous ways of practicing Karma Yoga, closer to home in our daily lives. Many times we just need to STOP; stop the mindless tasks that all too often we spend our time on and attach to without being aware. Karma Yoga isn’t talking about spirituality without practicing it. It is conscious action.
At Lotus Blau Karma Yoga is practiced through the different projects inside and outside of Lotus Blau. Periodically, we let students know when there is a Karma Yoga project, so if they are interested, they can participate.
